Police clashed with protesters in Athens

Greek police firing tear gas and stun grenades at protesters in the capital Athens for violence in protests against government austerity measures (19/10).

Throw bottles and stones flare bombs in a rally attended by tens of thousands of people.

The rally marked a national strike for 48 hours that crippled the capital and several other cities.

In recent weeks,protests increased throughout Greece and the unions said the rally was the biggest times throughout 2011.

In Syntagma Square,downtown Athens,more than 70,000 people gathered as an expression of dissent over the government's economic policies.

While outside the parliament building, hundreds of riot police confronted a group of young people and clashes between the two parties to bloom.

Some of the protesters were using gas masks while others wore cloth masks.

Opposed to savings
48-hour strike was called by two major unions in the public service sector and private companies.

Government offices, private,and shops closed while small businessmen and shopkeepers took part in this strike.

The officer was involved in the flight tower for 12-hour strike on Wednesday and about 150 domestic and international flights were canceled.

National strikes and protests are against saving measures taken by the government, which is struggling to reduce large budget deficits amid concerns of the threat of bankruptcy.

The European Union and the International Monetary Fund, IMF, demanded that the economic tightening measures taken as a requirement to have two emergency aid package.

There was also concern among the European Union, if the crisis Greece can not be handled properly then it will spread to other member countries.

So far the Greek government has announced a policy of increasing the retirement age, cut the salaries of civil servants and imposed a tax increase.

Meanwhile, a temporary suspension of civil servants are likely to be passed in a vote in parliament, Thursday, October 20.
